An easy walk from your Chateau Marlborough hotel accommodation, Blenheim township is full of small boutiques and galleries to delight treasure-seekers of all ages.

The focal point of Blenheim town is the attractive Seymour Square, the base for the Garden Marlborough festival each November, with its well-tended flowerbeds, memorial clock tower and fountain. An historic bandstand and amphitheatre, adjacent to Seymour Square, are regularly used for a wide range of performing arts.

Of historic interest are both Riverlands Cob Cottage, furnished in pioneer style, and the Brayshaw Museum Park with its reconstructed colonial village. A miniature railway runs alongside the river, transporting passengers from Blenheim town to Brayshaw Park museum and settler town.

Blenheim has a reputation for lovely gardens, including Waterlea Gardens and Pollard Park botanical gardens, featuring winding walkways through its gardens and rivers along with children’s playgrounds and barbeque areas for those summer picnics.

Activities in the Blenheim countryside include whitewater rafting, tramping, boating, kayaking, horse trekking, mountain biking, trout fishing and skiing. More sedate pursuits include strolling through the lovely parks and gardens of Blenheim, or enjoying a visit to an art studio, olive grove, cheese factory or boutique distillery.

Events & Festivals

If you stay with Chateau Marlborough in January, you can catch premier horseracing action at the Waterlea Racing Club Carnival.

In February, you’re right on time to experience the legendary Marlborough Food and Wine Festival, a week-long festival of Marlborough wine and gourmet delights!

March is the month for the awesome Havelock Mussel Festival, while April and Easter weekend are abuzz with crowds for the Classic Warbird Fighters Airshow.

November is Garden Marlborough time, and Blenheim town and Gardens come alight with summer color. The Garden Fete held at Seymour Square on the last day of this wonderful event is a showstopper.

The many hidden resorts and private homes of the Marlborough Sounds rely on boats to deliver them post and supplies and you can come along for the journey!

These ‘mail cruises’ or ‘delivery cruises’, as they are known, allow you to explore so many of the secluded coves and historic inlets of the Marlborough Sounds. Eco-Cruises to the bird sanctuary of Motuara Island are also a superb way to see the Marlborough Sounds. Lunch cruises are a very popular option and may see you landing at a secluded beach for a gourmet BBQ.

There are so many exceptional cruises to choose from! Luckily, the Chateau Marlborough team can recommend options to you. Stay in our luxury Marlborough accommodation before and after your Marlborough Sounds cruise, and our reception team can also arrange your cruise booking.

Another Marlborough Sounds cruise option is the greenshell mussel cruise, which departs from either Picton or Havelock. This unique food and wine cruise has proven very popular with Chateau Marlborough guests, and takes you through the tranquil waters of the Marlborough Sounds to learn about the history of the sounds and pioneering people. Enjoy a visit to a greenshell mussel farm and sample freshly steamed mussels with a glass of world famous Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
